Made in NC: Sunburst Trout Farms
What happens when a student at the Yale School of Engineering drops out? He becomes a Haywood County trout farmer, of course.
Sunburst Trout Farms began in 1948 under Dick Jennings and has grown to become the second-largest trout supplier in North Carolina. Dick’s grandsons Wes and Ben now run the farm, raising trout in the pristine waters of the Shining Rock Wilderness Area in the Pisgah National Forest. The fish are brought over to the processing center in Waynesville up to three times each week.
Each morning, the team arrives early to ensure the highest-quality product for their customers.
Today, the farm has a 12,000-square-foot facility that is home to the Sunburst Market storefront and processing site. They sell whole trout served at destinations across the nation, including the renowned Biltmore Estate and Grove Park Inn. They also offer rainbow trout caviar, smoked trout dip and their original trout jerky. To learn more or buy their products, visit sunbursttrout.com or call (800) 673-3051.
